THE TRANSPARENT SHOPPING JEWEL

The new “K” shopping centre in the heart of Kaiserslautern attracts visitors to a 20,900 m2 retail space with around 100 stores including fashion boutiques, perfumeries and a market hall. The building is part of the “New Kaiserslautern City Centre” Project.

Insulating glass was considered an important element of the sustainable design of the shopping mall and its integration into the urban landscape. The glass supplied by arcon not only improves energy efficiency but also helps ensure a special shopping experience.

For EUR 160 million, Kaiserslautern has obtained a new attraction: The “K” shopping centre brings together numerous retailers from various sectors and as a result complements and/or consolidates the diverse retail landscape of the technology and university town in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate region.

It also connects the previously separate pedestrian zones in Fackelstrasse and Mühlstrasse and is therefore a crucial component of the “New Kaiserslautern City Centre” Project. The old Karstadt department store building, which previously stood where the shopping centre is now, has been integrated into the new build.

ISOLAR SOLARLUX® CREATES A LUSTROUS GLASS FACADE

What is distinctive about the 20 m high new build are the glass structures from arcon, the technology brand of Arnold Glas. “They were designed according to the new glass standard DIN 18008. In this context, structural analyses were decisive and of course also the requirements for extremely high glass quality,” stresses Albert Schweitzer, Plant Manager at arcon.

The glass makes a substantial contribution to the energy efficiency of the building. To achieve the specified g-value of 21 percent, single-pane toughened safety glass, featuring a fine screen-printed dot pattern, was chosen for the 400 m2 roof glazing.

The glass is also treated with the solar control coating ISOLAR SOLARLUX® A70. Combined with the dot patterns, it helps ensure that even on sunny days the building interior remains pleasantly cool.

In addition, it gives the glass a unique neutrality and brilliance. These energy-specific and visual benefits are also typical of the steel and glass entrance facades, which are also coated. In this case, 600 m2 heat-strengthened laminated safety glass was used.

The canopies of the entrance facades, covering an area of 160 m2, also consist entirely of laminated safety glass and blend harmoniously into the glass architecture of the building.

THE SPECIAL EXPERIENCE OF GLASS WALKWAYS

Those who don’t just want to shop but also enjoy the view of Kaiserslautern’s inner city can simply go to the first floor. For the best possible view outside, visitors can go right to the front of the facade on a non-slip laminated safety glass walkway. To guarantee the safety of visitors this glass has to meet special requirements.

“The large number of different glass structures over four floors was a real challenge. Everything had to fit accurately and needed to be delivered in the shortest of time. It all worked out perfectly,” says facade designer Siegmar Christ from engineering firm “EURO-Fassadentechnik” in Bad Hersfeld.
