How can Efficient Glass save the Units :

  • Conduct a proper study about your building by doing a proper Sun path Analysis, Day Light Analysis, Energy Analysis.
  • Find out efficiency ratio of HVAC consumption Vis a Vis Glass used on a façade.
  • Identify Various Glass Colors & their properties needed Area wise.
  • Also know Whether a Double glass would benefit your façade or not.
  • Find Out different Sun shading Devices you can use on the façade & their efficiency with proper backup calculations.
  • Conduct Simulation studies if you need more detailed Approach to understand the façade properly.
  • Understand the Concept of Net Heat Gain in the Building.
  • Not Allowing heat from outside leads to less HVAC loads.
  • Know the U value factor of the Glass which is the rate at which Glass transmits heat out which is mostly faster with temperature difference between outside & inside.
  • Conduct proper Shading studies right from Shading co-efficient of glass to shading devices needed to Allow Light inside the building.

Conclusion:

These mere small studies help you in contributing to the Nation, so please do it however small façade it may be a single Unit Saved is Single Unit Earned

Sun Path Analysis:

Day by day with high rise structure coming up, it is becoming very important study related to effect of Annual Sun Path over the façade. Sun path analysis generates the report of having a shadow on the glass to cut the glare & have a shade so the occupants are at ease sitting next to façade.

Analysis of impact of sun with respect to site conditions also gives a report on daylight coming inside the building so the designer can understand amount of illumination of internal lighting needed.

Position of sun has two angles Altitude & Azimuth.

Altitude is angle between horizon & location of sun along X,

Azimuth is angle with respect to horizon measured to ease or west along Y.

Sun path study helps in reducing heat gain inside the building in turn reducing Heat Loads so less capacity HVAC* systems.

 

During early days Architects always relied on shading chhajjas to cut the heat on the building interiors using shading strategies to give comfort to the occupant. Shading has its impact based on outer temperatures, climatic conditions & orientation of façade vis a vis Sunpath.

To summarize this study is most important for better efficiency of Façade in terms of reducing heat loads, Control Glare within the buildings & Plan the lighting systems of building.

The Melting Highrise

Recently I read an article on a building façade constructed in London with a concave South face façade, had a major issue as this shape of façade was melting things at the ground, surprising how did this happen & what went wrong in this façade.

The major issue with this façade was the design of its concave surface resulting the sun rays travelling till the ground with high heat intensity focusing at particular point. The design error in terms of shape resulted in intensified the solar rays into one focal point through the number of panels. Surroundings had lot of issues with carpet burning, certain plastic parts melting on the parked cycles, cars at one particular point & on particular day.

Moving further into this topic even today there are many buildings in India where the reflection of glass falls on the road causing lot of inconvenience to the pedestrians. Engineering has solutions for this issue where a detailed study of façade needs to understand the geometry of façade.

 

There is a study of façade fluidics thermal energy intensity analysis which helps to understand control the façade materials temperature in relationship to climate & orientations. One might have observed in certain areas trees near façade building might have burnt leaves or dead leaves this in another aspect where the glass acts as mirror & the direct solar light & heat are transmitted onto the trees & surroundings.

To increase the stored thermal energy within the glass substrate one has to conduct a deep insight study of materials throughout the 12 months cycle of sun travel path & behaviour with orientation of the façade. Fluidic study has a further impact on the surface temperature of the façade materials & their heat transfer behaviour around the surroundings.

Major factors one has to observe during a design

  • Thermal conductivity of the façade materials.

  • Orientation of the façade to sun.

  • Heat dispersions patterns & surroundings of the façade.

  • Heat capacity of the materials & fluidic flow passage.
